People who fail to comply with the Community Protection Notices, or 'dogbos' as they are being termed, could be fined up to £2,000. The new powers came into force on October 20.
The move has been welcomed by numerous animal charities including Wood Green. Linda Cantle, the charity's director of animal welfare, said Wood Green broadly supported the changes, but with reservations over enforcement.
"We want to celebrate the fact that councils and police have new powers and tools to promote responsible ownership - however, the proof of their worth will really be in the pudding," she said.
