Belgian Shepherd (Groenendael) Breed Profile

9e1cf238-e65e-4d04-8fce-89ec0baf122c
The Belgian Shepherd Groenendael is an intelligent and sociable breed who thrives under firm, fair leadership.

Originally bred as a sheepdog, they are increasingly finding work with security services due to their ability to manage complex tasks with ease. The breed is recognised as four distinct varieties, the Groenendael, Laekenois, Malinois, Tervueren.

Belgian Shepherd (Groenendael) character

All Belgian Shepherd's require a high level of mental stimulation because of their intelligent nature and professional training is recommended. A practice of firm, early socialization is also important as despite their friendly temperament they can develop negative behaviours in response to a lack of stimulation. The Belgian Shepherd doesn't respond well to negative training techniques and will become quickly bored of repeating simple tasks.

Belgian Shepherd (Groenendael) size

Dogs should measure between 61-66cm and bitches 56-61cm and their weight should be in proportion to their size.

Belgian Shepherd (Groenendael) health

The only significant health concern is the relatively high incidence of epilepsy in the breed. As is common with large breeds there is also a tendency toward Hip Dysplasia.

Belgian Shepherd (Groenendael) care

As these dogs require plenty of stimulation and a high degree of training, they may not be suitable for inexperienced owners or those without adequate time and space.

Remember! All breed profiles are general and every dog is an individual.
