Should I get my dog's trousers trimmed?
(Q) I’ve got two young female long-haired Border Collies who both have thick trousers. Although I keep both dogs as clean as possible — in the wet weather it’s a nightmare — I spotted flies around their rear ends when they were lying out in the sun. Would it benefit them if I had their trousers trimmed for the summer?
(A) Groomer Diana North says: Yes, it is a very good idea to reduce the weight and density of long trousers on a dog and keep the anal area clear.
Keeping the trousers well combed on a very regular basis and removing any dead coat will help too. Using a good pair of thinning scissors will remove a lot of the excess bulk and length.
If you do not feel confident doing this yourself a professional groomer’s help could be sought.
