Issue Summary

As I write this on the last day of ‘press’, we find ourselves well into January, and the merriment of Christmas already feels like a distant echo. Ironically, a certain unnamed colleague in the office has initiated a countdown to the next festive season! It’s a reality for certain professions, like retail, who are already gazing beyond to Easter and the future, much like us in the publishing world. As we release the March issue in February, our pens are poised to craft the April edition. With the blink of an eye, we’ll traverse the customary soggy British summer, and soon enough, Dracula masks will make their appearance in supermarkets, accompanied by reminders that there are only eight Saturdays left until Christmas – leaving us to ponder, where has 2024 disappeared to?!

What's in this Issue?

Amidst the relentless pace of time, we pause to contemplate the first month of the new year, which has been marked by widespread flooding (and significant global events such as earthquakes, war, and famine). Reflecting on my previous month’s grumble about muddy dog paws in the kitchen, such trivial inconveniences pale in comparison to the heartbreaking impact of torrential rainfall on numerous homes and businesses. To those who have experienced such hardships, my heartfelt sympathy goes out to you, and grappling with the aftermath must be an overwhelming ordeal.

In times of turmoil, I’ve previously emphasised the unique capacity of dogs to nurture our mental well-being. This truth becomes evident as a refreshing dog walk not only clears the mind, but also momentarily halts the rapid cadence of the world, offering a chance to be fully present in the moment. Without delving too deeply into a hipster sentiment, the harmonious sounds of birds, gentle swaying of trees, and the sheer joy of witnessing your dog frolic through the woods or revel in the freedom of an open beach – these are simple, magical moments worth cherishing. They serve as a sanctuary for our sanity, unless, of course, you find yourself a tad disoriented on a deserted airfield (see page 62).
