Artist of the week: Tracey Pinnington – Pet Portrait and Wildlife Artist

Artist of the week

I live and work in the leafy countryside of Hertfordshire. When I'm not drawing or painting I can often be found out walking through the fields and forests with my mischievous Airedale Terrier 'Dexter', he is such a clown and makes me laugh with his antics everyday. He makes a great studio companion (even if he does try to steal my pencils).

Like most artists I've always had a passion for art and there was never any doubt I would follow an artistic career path. After training and graduating as a Graphic Designer I enjoyed an exciting career that encompassed designing and illustrating for some well known blue chip companies. In 2003 I took a break from design to start a family. This gave me the opportunity to really focus on my passion for drawing and also gave me more time to spend with my family.

Dogs are one of my favourite things to draw. I love the challenge of trying to capture different textures. Fur for example can be so different from dog to dog, and requires various techniques to portray. I'm also captivated by eyes, they are so expressive and I really enjoy trying to make them look as realistic as possible. They can bring so much feeling and emotion to a portrait. I don't claim to be a photorealistic artist, but I do try to capture each dog's individual character with as much detail as possible.

I mainly work in coloured pencils, I love the fact you can take them anywhere! They aren't messy and you can also create a whole range of different styles with them.

My work is traditionally hand drawn using the very best artist grade materials. For my coloured pencil portraits I use a selection of professional pencils, working mainly in Prismacolor and Faber Castell Polychromos. I also love to paint with inks and have recently started taking commissions for portraits in a more contemporary, and bright style. It's great fun to work in this way as it is very different to my usual style.

I'm so honoured to have collectors of my work from all over the world and feel blessed to be able to do something that I love and have a great passion for everyday.
