Is my dog's new flea treatment safe to use?

Is my dog's new flea treatment safe to use?

(Q) Our Springer Spaniel, aged nine months, has always been given Stronghold for flea prevention, but on a recent visit to the vet’s it was changed to Bravecto, which I was told kills ticks as well as fleas. I do not know much about this product and am worried about side effects. Can you tell me more about it?

(A) Vet Roberta Baxter says: It was launched in the USA and UK. Prior to its launch it went through the usual testing for safety and efficacy, and has been licensed for use in dogs, including during pregnancy and lactation. There are very few noted side effects — such as a slight lack of appetite, drooling, or, in some cases, vomiting and diarrhoea — which are occasional and mild.

The medicine is effective against fleas and ticks for 12 weeks. It is said to be particularly easy to administer as it is very palatable, while being hypo-allergenic. I’m planning to try it on my own dog, as it sounds very convenient and effective.
