Is it safe to give my dog krill oil?

(Q) Is it safe to give dogs krill oil? What benefits might it have?

(A) Vet Holly Mash says: I would choose to use a fish oil such as salmon rather than krill, as this has been much more widely used for its omega-3 fatty acid content. It is a more reliable and well-used supplement with the benefits of more background data on its action and recommended dosage than krill oil.

(A) Vet Roberta Baxter says: Dogs can benefit from essential fatty acid supplementation, as a balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids might have health benefits for the skin, joints, kidneys, and heart. Certain formulations of supplements for dogs contain the appropriate balance of fatty acids, have recognised dose rates for efficacy, and are ideal.

Krill oil contains high levels of omega-3 but isn’t the ideal balance, and there isn’t a recognised dose rate.
