How can I get my dog on the blood donor list?
(Q) I’ve heard about dogs being blood donors and would like to get my dogs involved. Are there any weight restrictions on donors? My two terriers aren’t very big.
(A) Vet Roberta Baxter says: Blood transfusions and blood products can be life-saving for sick pets, and dogs, like humans, can be blood donors. Some practices hold a list of potential donors within the practice, and only take blood when it is needed in an emergency.
Others use the Pet Blood Bank UK (PBBUK) to source blood. In order to be able to take a reasonable amount of blood without putting the donor or recipient at risk, certain criteria apply. I’m afraid that your terriers might be too small to qualify.
