Can I make home-made dog treats?
(Q) I’d like to make some home-made dog treats. Do you have a good recipe? I was worried about making any with peanut butter or honey due to the sugar content.
(A) Vet John Burns says: I don’t think there is a problem with using peanut butter or honey, as a treat is, by its nature, given only occasionally and in small amounts. Here is a recipe for home-made liver cake, supplied by Rebecca our nutritionist:
- 500 grams of liver
- 500 grams oats
- 1 egg (optional)
- 1 – 2 spoons of garlic (optional)
Blitz the ingredients together, and place on a non-stick or lightly greased baking tray with a lip. Cook at 180 degrees centigrade for 20 to 30 minutes until firm, and then allow to cool. Once cool, cut into small squares and place in bags. These can be frozen and brought out when needed.
