Can I give my dog tinned tuna?

Can I give my dog tinned tuna?

(Q) My dogs always eat chicken and pellets. I want to give them some fish for a change as one of them doesn’t always eat the chicken. Is it OK to give tinned tuna or is another fish better?

(A) Vet John Burns says: If the fish is not going to be the main part of your dog’s food I don’t think the variety matters. However, I think it is significant that one of the dogs doesn’t eat the chicken. This suggests that you are overfeeding.

The dogs should eat the pellets on their own without you needing to add anything. The chicken or fish should only be a little taster, not a means to get them to eat all their food. It will probably be helpful to reduce the overall amount of food you give.
