Are there any natural cures for incontinence?

(Q) My 10-year-old Weimaraner has recently developed urinary incontinence. The vet said it’s something to do with her being spayed, but I don’t think I really understood what he meant. He said he could put her on medication but I’d rather find a herbal or alternative solution. What can you suggest? Someone mentioned cantharis, but as this is made from insects I’m a bit put off!

(A) Homeopathic vet Holly Mash says: There are several homeopathic remedies that can effectively stop the signs of incontinence in bitches, however it wouldn’t be very helpful for me to give you a list of them because homeopathy works by treating the patient, not just the symptoms. Therefore, different remedies will be used in each different bitch with incontinence, depending on their unique symptoms (homeopaths look at very precise symptoms, such as the degree and timing of when she leaks urine, and when it first developed), as well as her personality and other individualising characteristics.

The veterinary homeopath will then be able to build up a full picture of your dog as an individual and choose a homeopathic remedy that is correct for the totality of her symptoms, and hence hopefully stop her incontinence. The remedy called cantharis is indeed made from a Spanish fly, however it is usually prescribed for cystitis rather than incontinence.
