Classified in the Hound group, the Whippet is an amicable companion and a solid worker. Loves running, loves a fireplace and loves to be with people, although perhaps more of a one-man dog than displaying affection to everyone
An excellent hunter but they love nothing more than human companionship, sitting close by on the sofa. The Breed Standard describes them as having a "gentle, affectionate, even disposition". They are quiet dogs and perhaps more suited to adults and/or older children.
A medium dog. The breed standard suggests a desirable height for dogs as 47-51cm, bitches 44-47cm.
The breed enjoys good health with little breed-specific medical concerns. Their skin is prone to laceration but all in all, a healthy dog.
Whippet Special Care
Be aware of the hunting instinct, especially off the lead. Always make sure you are confident he'll come back to you when recalled. Watch their skin too - with little coat to protect him, it can tear more easily than other dogs.
Remember! All breed profiles are general and every dog is an individual.
